E.C. ''Curly'' Bell, 82, died Aug. 23, 1995, at Providence Alaska Medical Center. A funeral was held at Evergreen Memorial Chapel, downtown, with officers of Anchorage Elks Lodge No. 1351 officiating. Pallbearers included Jack O'Toole, Joe Riley, Bob Maynard, Ole Rohrbaugh, Stan Engle and Carl Libbey.
Mr. Bell was born Aug. 3, 1913, in Lakemp, Okla., to Jesse and Mae Little Bell. He graduated from high school in Booker, Texas, then from Panhandle Junior College. He was attending the University of Texas when the Depression came and cut short his plans to study law. In 1935, Mr. Bell arrived in Alaska to work for the Federal Bureau of Fisheries in Ketchikan. He met and married Anchorage-born Thelma Carlson in 1937 and moved to Palmer, where he managed warehouse facilities for the Matanuska colonists. In 1938, the Bells moved to Anchorage. Mr. Bell worked for Alaska Transfer Co. as a teamster-bookkeeper. Starting in 1941, he became a well-known proprietor of many local bars and nightclubs, including Club Esquire, the Aleutian Gardens, City Mike's and the Union Club. He retired in 1974, and in recent years he and his wife spent winters in Mesa, Ariz. Mr. Bell was a member of Pioneers of Alaska and life member of Anchorage Elks Lodge. He was a founder of the Anchorage Glacier Pilots Booster Club and always was a generous sponsor of community sports and charitable activities, according to his family.
Mr. Bell is survived by his wife of 58 years, Thelma; daughter, Jenny Earle Shea of California; son, Jesse Bell of Anchorage; brother, Mac of Los Angeles; two sisters, Thelma and Juanita, both of Washington state; and six grandchildren. His son, Rodney, died in 1980. Mr. Bell's family will host a final ''last call'' at the Pioneer Bar after services.
