He was born in Hoopeston to John J. and Helen Wells Kaag. He married Sandra L. Hawthorne on May 6, 1961 in Hoopeston. She survives.
Also surviving are one son, Rod (Misti) Kaag; one daughter, Amy (John) Stewart; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Billy Kaag and one sister, Ann Martin.
He served on the Hoopeston Police Department for 35 years, serving 32 of those years as Chief of Police. He retired in 1997.
