Victor H. Sims, Sr., 100, died June 12, 2009 after a short illness in St. Charles, MO. Born September 22, 1908, in Estabutchie, MS, he was the second son of Waldo and Idell Nixon Sims. Growing up in cotton gins he became an expert mechanic. He rode his 1928 Harley motorcycle to Chicago to complete the Coyne Electric School course for electricians. In 1932 the family moved to a farm north of Vancleave, east of River Road on what would later be Sims Mill Pond Road, named for the family. Victor restored and built the water-powered grist mill there for grinding grain. He married Inez Havens and they had two children Elizabeth Sims Waldorf and Victor Hugo Sims, Jr. Victor worked as an electrician first at Ingalls and later at the International Paper Co. mill in Kreole from which he retired. After Inez's death, in 1961 he married Elnora King Breland. He concentrated love on his family.
Because of good choices, Victor enjoyed excellent health until recently. He is preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Bruce Sims, his sister, Grace McCaffrey, his first wife, Inez and his son Hugo. He is survived by his devoted wife of 48 years Elnora of St. Charles, MO, his daughter, Elizabeth, and husband, David of Corvallis, OR, his daughter-in-law, Glenda, of Portland, OR, his stepson, Elton Breland and wife Joanne of St. Charles, MO, five grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
He was a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Union 733 and the Masonic Lodge for over 60 years. He was an avid reader and maintained a keen interest in history, current affairs and science. He had a wonderful vitality for life. He enriched all who knew him.
Heritage Funeral Home on highway 63 north of I-10 is in charge of arrangements. Friends and family are invited to the wake Tuesday June 16 from 6 to 8 pm and the funeral service in the chapel at 3 pm Wednesday June 17 with burial at Machpelah Cemetery. Come share memories and help us celebrate the life of this extraordinary man.
