Funeral services were held at th Baptist church in this city at 4 p.m. Monday, conducted by the Rev. D.K. Foster, for William James (Uncle Bud) Altom, well known farmer who had resided for many years in the McCarty school neighborhood south of this city a few miles, whose death occurred suddenly the preceding day at his home. He was more than 79 years old.
Mr. Altom had driven his truck to a nearby store late in the afternoon on an errand and on his return, as the vehicle reached the yard of his home, it crashed into an outbuilding and came to a stop. Apparently he had been stricken with a heart attack and died at the wheel, life being extinct when his wife reached him. No inquest was deemed necessary.
Mr. Altom was born at Bath Springs, Decatur county, Tenn., Dec. 20, 1865, spending the greater part of his life in that state but coming to Pemiscot county in 1917. He followed farming practically all his life.
In 1860 he was married to Miss Eliza Brooks and two children were born to them, Jacob Alexander and Joseph Kennie Altom. The former died in 1895 and his wife died one year later. He is survived by the latter son, also his second wife, the former Ettie Tucker, whom he married in 1902 and to whom no children were born.
He also is survived by one brother, Jack Altom, two sisters, Mrs. Becky Eason and Mrs. Della Brasher, and two grandchildren and one great-grand child. He was a member of the Methodist church, with which he united in early life in Tennessee.
