The son of Jacob & Mary Ann (Sheibley) Deach and stepson of David Long, in 1860 he was a farm laborer living with the Daniel Ritter family in Bethlehem, Northampton County, Pennsylvania, but his family was then residing in Jackson Township, Perry County.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Harrisburg August 6, 1862, mustered into federal service there as 2nd lieutenant of Co. I, 133rd Pennsylvania Infantry, promoted to 1st lieutenant D3ecember 23, and honorably discharged with his company May 21, 1863.

He married Susan Margaret Pound and fathered Anna Lapham (b. - married Charles Keefer Bradrick and Charles Reno Tombaugh), Charles Arthur (b. 01/05/69), and Franklin Jacob (b. 11/03/72). His first child was born in Odell, Illinois, and he later moved to Kansas.
