U.S. Civil War, 26th Michigan: Alexander Hamilton Blanding, (Blending) age 26, of Vergennes, Kent County, Michigan was taken prisoner with Jedediah Riggs at Spotsylvania on May 12. He suffered imprisonment at Libby and Andersonville where his weight went from 160 to only 90 pounds nine months later when he was exchanged and returned to his unit. He mustered out with the regiment at Alexandria, Virginia on June 4, 1865. Born in New York, this Michigan farmer and his wife, Almaette (Nash), would later be blessed with the birth of a son, Maurise J. Blanding on March 14, 1868, who was followed by eight other siblings as the family moved to Randall, Jewell County, Kansas in 1872. Alexander died there on July 25, 1910. Ira Nash of Co. I. had been his brother-in-law. 26th Michigan service included: Alexandria, Washington, Suffolk, the New York Draft Riots, Mine Run, Wilderness, Po River, Spotsylvania,
