Body of Five-Year-Old Boy Recovered Sunday by Volunteer Firemen.
Cedar Falls — The first drowning in the Cedar river here in four years occurred early Sunday when Robert Hartley, 5, son of Mrs. Irma Hartley, 717 West Fourth street, lost his
life in the river near the Higby boathouse.
The drowning followed a fishing trip by the youngster and his brother, Donald, 9. The body was recovered at 8 a. m. Sunday after an hour of searching by Harris Wilson and
Chris Vahrenwald, volunteer members of the fire department.
Last Seen Saturday Night.
The boy was last seen at 7 p. m. Saturday when his brother left him near the river. The boys had been fishing near the boathouse during the afternoon: The little boy had taken
off his shoes and when they were ready to return home he forgot them. The older boy sent him back for his shoes, and that was the last seen of him alive. When the body was found the boy had his shoes on and was tangled in a short piece of fishing line. Police believe that the boy returned to the river bank, put on his shoes and then went to take another look at his fish line. Coroner Sidney Smith of Waterloo answered the call and reported the death due to accidental drowning.
Police Aid In Search.
Police spent Saturday night searching Island park, the railroad tracks and other territory in the vicinity of the river bank.
Robert Dale Hartley was born at Greenfield, Ia., on Sept. 21, 1937. In September, 1938, his father was killed in an accident and the family moved to this city, where they have
lived since.
Surviving are the mother, three brothers, Richard, 12; Donald, 9, and Dean, 7. Also residing in this city is the maternal grandfather, George Lawrence, 717 West Fourth street.
Funeral services will be Tuesday at 2 p. m., Rev. H. Hughes Dill, pastor of the First Methodist church, will officiate. Burial will be in Greenwood cemetery.
