Civil War Union Army Officer. He was commissioned as Captain and commander of Company A, 17th Pennsylvania Volunteer Cavalry on September 6, 1862. Promoted to Major on January 11, 1863, then to Lieutenant Colonel on June 13, 1863, he was dismissed from the service on February 18, 1864 for "having, in violation of existing orders and customs of war,crossed the lines of pickets, delivering and receiving letters from persons outside the lines". On March 22, 1864 he was restored to command, and was promoted to Colonel on December 18, 1864. He was honorably mustered out on June 20, 1865.
