He was born on January 16, 1935, to the late Samuel R. and Mattie Lee Gaines in Sweetwater, TN.
The family moved to Alcoa in 1937. He accepted Christ at an early age and joined Bethel Missionary Baptist Church. He attended Charles M. Hall School and graduated with the Class of 1952. Shortly after graduation, he enlisted in the Air Force on July 17, 1952, except for a brief separation in 1956, he remained in the Air Force for over 20 years.
His overseas assignments were Ashiya AB, Japan, Yokota AB, Japan, where he was joined by his family, and Peshawar, Pakistan. His final military assignment was The Pentagon.
He was awarded the Joint Service Commendation Award upon retirement from the military on November 1, 1972, and immediately went to work for the National Credit Union Administration as a Computer Programmer.
He subsequently transferred to the Army Computer System Command where he worked as a Computer Programmer Analyst until his retirement in January 1994. Upon retirement, he returned to Alcoa.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Ben W., Leonard and Charles D. Gaines; sister, Gloria D. Clark and son, Clarence D. Gaines. He leaves to mourn his passing a devoted wife of 55 years, the former Shirley DeHart; daughter, Cheryl J. Gaines; granddaughters, Latoya Alston and Deztane Nesmith; great grandsons, Maurice and Derrick Elder, Jr.; brother, Samuel Gaines of Louisville, TN; sister, Minnette Criner of Detroit, MI; sister-in-law, Flora Gaines of Knoxville, TN, Odetha Whitted of Alcoa and Peggy Thomas of Louisville, TN; brothers-in-law, Paul (Florence) DeHart of Orrville, OH and many other nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and associates.
The family would like to give special thanks to the staff of Blount Memorial Hospital, Morning View Village Assisted Living, Colonial Hills Nursing Center, St. Mary's Special Select and the Bethel Missionary Baptist Church for their caring and compassion during his illness.
The funeral will be at 11 AM Saturday, September 12, 2009, at Bethel Missionary Baptist Church, Alcoa, with Rev. Ralph J. Miller, Jr. officiating.
The interment will follow immediately at Sherwood Memorial Gardens with full military honors .
The family will receive friends 30 minutes prior to the start of the service. The body may be viewed from Noon - 6 PM at Foothills Funeral Home, Maryville on Friday.
