He was a school boy, age thirteen, when on 1 April 1864, he joined Company F of the 21st Virginia Infantry. He was taken prisoner at the Battle of Sayler's Creek. After the War, he returned to Richmond, entering the Tobacco trade. He soon was in business for himself, buying and exporting. He rose to the elite in Richmond business. President of Planters Bank, Director of the Virginia Trust Company, also Director of Southern Biscuit Works, Virginia-Carolina Chemical, and Southern Cotton Oil Company. He and his large family lived at 117 West Grace Street, Richmond.
