John Elam Shemwell was the youngest son of Zachariah Thomas Shemwell and Elizabeth Evans Shemwell
John Elam was born Aug. 6, 1846 and was the youngest of three brothers. His older brother was Joseph H. Shemwell. Joseph would later join the Confederate Army and survive the War. His other brother was Thomas H. Shemwell whom was married to Sarah M. Elam.
John Elam married Marinda Arbelle "Lou" Stack sometime about 1878. To this marriage were born three children- Emma A,. John D., and Thomas M. Shemwell
John served as the local constable. In June of 1890 he was involved in an incident that would tragically lead to his assassination.
After his death, his widow, Lou, was remarried to Ephraim B. Bilbrey.

Shemwell, J.E., murdered at Dover by W.P. Wallace, his three sons, and James Page; killed on 20 June 1890. W.P. Wallace's brother J.E. Wallace had been killed by Shemwell three months before. (Maury Democrat, 17 July 1890.)

J.E. Shemwell bought Tom for 100 dollars.
