LA CROSSE TRIBUNE, Monday, February 1909: "Dad" Bucknam Paralysis Victim
William H. Bucknam, better known in the city and at the stations between La Crosse and the Twin cities as "Dad" Bucknam, died at his home, 114 North Second street, late Saturday afternon (sic) of creeping paralysis. Mr. Bucknam was for 25 years a news agent on the passenger trains between La Crosse and Minneapolis and St. Paul but quit this business four years ago on account of his advanced age and failing health. Since he left the road up to about three months ago, he was ticket taker at the Bijou theater.
About three months ago, Mr. Bucknam suffered a stroke of paralysis and at that time no hopes were held out for his recovery. He improved, however, until he was able to be up and around at his home. Two weeks ago he suffered a second stroke and his condition became gradually worse until death came Saturday afternoon. Mr. Bucknam was 69 years of age and has been a resident of this city for more than a quarter of a century. He was a soldier in the civil war and was a member of the Wilson-Colwell post of the G. A. R.
He was married fifteen years ago to Miss Hildebrand of Muscatine, Ia., who, with one son, Charles Bucknam, of St. Edwards, Neb., survives him. He also leaves three brothers and three sisters, all of whom live out of the city.
The funeral will be held this afternoon from the home and the Wilson-Colwell post will be in charge. Interment will be made in the Oak Grove cemetery, with Mrs. Theodore Manustedt in charge.
