Kathryn was born on Sept. 13, 1907 to Walter E. and Emma Mae (McCarty) Gartrell in Sommerset, Neb. The family moved to Sterling in 1913. She attended Sterling schools.
On Jan. 24, 1925 Kathryn married Carter "Pat" Merrell. They lived at 304 Platte St., which was the old Merrell homestead that had been moved to town. They also spent about two years in LaGrange, Wyo. In 1931 they moved to a cabin on 160 acres in the mountains near Paonia.
In 1932 they retumed to Sterling with their growing family. For the next few years Kathryn worked for the railroad cleaning passenger cars at night. She also worked for the White Kitchen Bakery during the days for many years.
They had seven children. The first, Donald, died shortly after birth. Their other children were Donna, Opal, Robert, Jean, June and Jim. Raising six children during the depression was difficult and there were some tough times, but Kathryn kept her priorities straight, family first, no matter what the sacrifice. One year later, Pat went to the mountains to work on the Taylor Dam because there was no work here. Kathryn stayed home and cared for all the kids as well as work ing at various local restaurants part-time. Both Pat and Kathryn were proud of the fact that even with six kids, during the depres sion and illness and hard times, they never once accepted any public assistance. They did it the hard way and on their own.
Even during the hard times it was important to both that all the kids had what was needed and enjoyed life. There were many picnics and roasting-ear roasts down along the river bottom, swimming parties and ice skating days. Short trips around the coun try became all day events.
Kathryn enjoyed all of her family and extended family. She also enjoyed traveling. As a family they visited almost all the states, including Alaska. They also traveled to Mexico. After the kids were grown and Pat passed away, she still traveled. She visit ed Hawaii and Europe. She was active in Senior Citizens and was a life-long member of the First Christian Church. She enjoyed gardening and card parties with her friends. She also enjoyed oil painting and art classes and keeping active.
She was a loving mother who will be sadly missed by family and friends alike.
