Fannie Allen left the final Allen homeplace, which overlooked the Cosby Highway in Newport, to Aunt Bessie who had taken care of her mother in her old age. For much of the time, widowed Aunt Jennie lived with her and they tended a vegetable garden for food. They also took in boarders. They supported one another, particularly when Bessie's sight started failing and Jennie's deafness progressed. Bessie was my Mom's favorite, of her aunts. When my Mom was a little girl, Bessie taught her how to cook, especially pies and cakes.

Ardith Allen and Edith Elizabeth Allen Bryant are the daughters of James Roscoe Allen and Florence Denton--not the
daughters of Frances Mary "Fannie" Denton (who was the wife of John Terris "Pikey John" Allen).
