Geologist, Author Succumbs in S. L.
Dr. Armand J. Eardley, 71, 2681 Skyline Dr. (2400 East) award-winning geologist and author, and former dean of the University of Utah College of Mines and Mineral Industries, died at home Tuesday of a heart ailment.
Dr. Eardley, professor emeritus of the U. Department of Geological and Geophysical Sciences, served as dean of Mines and Mineral Industries for 11 years.
He was graduated from the University of Utah in 1927 with a bachelor of arts degree. He then attended Princeton University, from which he received his Ph.D. in 1930.
Dr. Eardley was the author of five books and more than 50 technical articles concerning his fields of interest.
In 1970, he was awarded an honorary doctor of science degree from the University of Utah.
He also received the Utah Academy of Science meritorious service award (1963), and the James E. Talmage Scientific Achievement Award from Brigham Young University (1963).
Dr. Eardley is listed in "Who's Who in Education in America", "American West", "American Men of Science", and the "National Register of Prominent Americans."
His organizational memberships included the Utah Geological Society, president of the Rocky Mountain Section, American Association of Petroleum Geologists, the National Association of Geology Teachers, the American Geological Institute and the American Geophysical Union.
Dr. Eardley was born on Oct. 25, 1901, in Salt Lake City, to John A. and Elizabeth Brown Eardley. He married Norma Ashton.
He is survived by his widow, one son and one daughter, Michael John Eardley and Mrs. A. W. Rogers, all of Salt Lake City.
Funeral services will be conducted Friday noon in the Monument Park LDS Ward chapel, 1565 Foothill Dr. Friends may call Thursday from 6-8 p.m. at 260 E. South Temple. Burial will be in Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park.
