He was graduated from Bowdoin College in 1862 and, in 1865, from the Bangor Theological Seminary. He was for two years pastor of the neighboring churches in Solon and Bingham, Maine, and then removed for his long pastorate in Woolwich. At the end of 1889, he accepted a call to the church in Limington, York County, and in 1893 to Gray. In 1896 he removed to Portland, serving as secretary and librarian of the Maine Historical Society.
In 1902, he moved to New York City, residing at first in Brooklyn, then in Manhattan, West 81st St., West 116th St., and lastly at Jackson Heights, Queens, where he died March 28, 1927.
