Elisha James Madison Wood and his twin brother, Levi Thomas Jefferson Wood, were the children of Elisha Wood and Hilda Hull. Their parents died when they were little, and they were raised by their grandmother in New York. Elisha and Hester Ann Hills married July 7, 1831, in Martinsburg, NY, where Elisha was a carpenter and justice of the peace.

Around 1843-1844, they moved to Plainfield, IL, and built a well-known octogon house, that remained standing until the 1990s. Elisha was a farmer, postmaster, and merchant.

Elisha and Hester had 7 children, James Duane (1833-1884), Amelia Elizabeth (m. Thomas, 1835-1922), John Emory (1838-1840), Milton Russel (1840-1919), Emma Caroline (1843-1846), Erwin Elisha (1848-1927), and Elwyn Augustus (1850-1916).
