Noted Educator Dies

Prof. H B Abernethy, Troy, age 81 years, 3 months and 9 days, was found dead in his bed Sunday morning, June 2, 1935, following an illness of neuritis, which started in the shoulder on Thursday before. When this trouble passed around over the heart, he did not last long.

Surviving him are his sister, Willie, who lived with him at the time of his death; Mrs. L A Barr, Norman, Okla.; Mrs. J Faulkner, Texarkana, Texas; a sister, Leitha, and a brother, Dr. John Abernethy, of Marks, Miss.

Mrs. Abernethy preceded him to the grave about two years.

Prof. Abernethy and his wife, "Miss Sallie," organized "The Mississippi Normal College, in Troy, in 1884, moving to Houston in 1887, where they continued their work under the same name until 1902. After leaving here they taught several years in Paris, Texas, then came back to Mississippi, and taught in the Southern Christian College, West Point, for a number of years; thence in the Mississippi delta, at Woodland, and lastly at Troy, where they began.

It can truthfully be said of Prof. Abernethy and his family that they taught in the days when dollars and cents did not county so much, for no one who wanted an education was ever turned away by them for the lack of funds; they came here to school, gave their notes, and taught later and paid them.

All over our South land, and elsewhere in the United States are former pupils of theirs, who rank with our nation's best, who stand as living monuments to their unselfish and noble works.

J D Simmons, a former graduate under Prof. Abernethy, and Rev. J L Henderson, a former pastor, both of Pontotoc, are giving his former pupils and friends an opportunity to contribute funds toward erecting a suitable monument at their graves. Any one desiring to contribute to their memory may send to either J D Simmons or Rev. J L Henderson, Pontotoc, Miss.
