DARLINGTON, March 10 – Robert Eli Register, 45, took his own life here this morning just off the Timmonsville highway where had driven his car. He had been in despondent health for several weeks.
Sheriff Wiley H Grantham, said he shot himself in the head.
Mr Register was retired member of the New York City Police Department, having been retired July 16, 1943, after many years of faithful service. He served in the Navy during World War I and was a member of St David's Masonic Lodge, a member of the Darlington Order of the Eastern Star, A member of the Darlington American Legion Post.
His father, the late Eli W. Register was for many years one of Darlington County's most effective sheriffs.
He came back to Darlington to live following his retirement. However he left several months ago to go to Florida. Mr Register was well-known throughout this section of South Carolina and his sudden and tragic death was a distinct shock.
Surviving are his widow, Mrs Lexie Pearce Register; his mother Mrs Eli W. Register of Florence; and adopted daughter, Mrs Pauline O'Brien of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; four sisters, Mrs Nancy Norwood of Darlington, Mrs S.O. Russell of Florence, Mrs James Walters of Wilmington N.C. And Mrs Rhea Privetle of Darlington.
Funeral service will be held Sunday afternoon at 4:30 at he Kistler Funeral Home here conducted by Rev. John Rhodes, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church assisted by Rev. William S. Jones, pastor of the First Baptist Church of this city.
Active pallbearers will by C.C. Norwood, Harry Norwood, James Norwood, S.O. Russell, Jr., Johnie Stokes, Jr., and Robert Jackson, Jr.
Honorary pallbearers will be Vance Butler, Joe Saleeby, J.E. Moncrief, J.S. Ramsey, Dr O.A. Alexander, members of the Darlington American Legion Post, members of the Masonic Lodge and the Order of the Eastern Star here.
