Elias "Eli" Hake was the oldest of the three children of George and Hannah (Sowers) Hake. He had three half-siblings from his father's second marriage to Catharine Ort Schmidt. On 11 May 1848 in Grant County, Wisconsin, Elias married Nancy Ann Coburn (1832-1905) the daughter of William and Catherine (Woods) Coburn. Elias and Nancy were the parents of four children:

Hannah Catherine (John Lewis Fry)
Leorene (died in infancy - female)
Robert Henry (Amelia R. Fry)
James Arnold (Eliza Ann Stead)
