Webster Vinson enlisted as a Private, 2nd Class, in the United States Army Signal Corps on July 10th, 1878, being promoted to the rank of Private, 1st Class, and was honorably discharged from the service on April June 12th, 1885.
He was appointed as a Paymaster, with the rank of Major, in the United States Army on April 3rd, 1899, accepting the appointment on April 29th.
Promoted to Deputy Paymaster General, with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel, on September 4th, 1907 and to Assistant Paymaster General, with the rank of Colonel, on August 6th, 1911.
He retired from active service on March 26th, 1914, due to disability incurred in the line of duty.
