Charles A. Schaub, 86, 808 Chestnut, died Mar. 12, 1944, in Memorial Hospital. He was taken to the hospital a week ago, after he had suffered a fractured hip in a fall in his home.
Mr. Schaub was born in Utica, Feb. 27, 1858, a son of the late Henry and Emma Wende Schaub, and always had lived here.
He attended the Utica schools and prior to his retirement, about 10 years ago, he was a general contractor and builder for about 50 years. Many homes and commercial buildings in Utica were built under his direction. He claimed to have erected the first bungalow in Utica, for his son, at the corner of Downer and Highland. He was the only surviving member of the Board of Charities and served until the city went under the White Charter and the board was abolished Jan. 1, 1908. For many years, Mr. Schaub was a Democratic committeeman in the 11th Ward. He spent much of his time in a cottage he owned in Sylvan Beach. He attended Trinity Lutheran Church.
His marriage to Anna Ollerrenshaw took place 63 years ago. She died Dec. 4, 1943. He was a member of Utica Lodge 33, BPOE, and a former member of the Red Men, Moose and Eagles.
He leaves two sons, Henry C. and Charles A. Schaub Jr., Utica, and one daughter, Miss Emma M. Schaub, executive secretary of the Oneida County Board of Child Welfare.
The funeral will be at 2:30 p. m. Wednesday from his home, with the Rev. Franklin Deck officiating. Burial will be in New Forest Cemetery. Utica Daily Press
