ALFRED KILEY, A YOUNG MAN DIES

Victim of Influenza After but Few Days of Sickness

William Alfred Kiley, died last evening at ten o'clock. Taken sick suddenly last week, he grew rapidly worse. Yesterday hope of his recovery was abandoned and medical skill could do nothing to stop the progress of the disease. The cause of death was influenza, with the complications of pneumonia.

Alfred Kiley was born in Marquette, Michigan on June 7th, 1883. He came with his parents to Grand Rapids in 1893. He was thus a Grand Rapids boy and his friends of boyhood mourn his death. He learned the printing trade at the
Herald-Review office. Naturally adapted to the work he has followed it practically all his life. He founded the first paper published at Nashwauk.

Later he was publisher of a paper at Floodwood and later still founded a newspaper at Crawford, Nebraska. Returning to northern Minnesota he engaged in the printing business at Virginia, Minnesota, and came to Grand Rapids last year. As a workman he was skillful and energetic. The interests of those for those for whom he was employed were his interests. He made friends readily, for his enthusiasm and disposition made him a pleasant companion and a sympathetic fellow workman. His death is a loss to those who knew him.

He is survived by his parents Mr. and Mrs. E.C. Kiley, a sister, Mrs. J. E.Brandmeier of Floodwood, his wife and a little three year old daughter. The funeral will be held this afternoon from the residence and will be private.

(obituary, Grand Rapids Herald-Review, November 27, 1918)

Biological father was Francis Yates. He was adopted by Edward C. Kiley in 1906 in Grand Rapids, Minnesota.
