Samuel William Henson was born in 1853 in Hardeman County, Tennessee to Joseph J. Henson and Sarah Catherine Rogers Henson. He endured the shooting death of his father as a child by Confederate bushwhackers in his own front yard. He moved north with his mother and grandparents, William A. and Molly Henson to Adams County, Illinois to escape persecution during the Civil War by the Confederates. He later settled in Callaway County, Missouri. He was arrersted and jailed numerous times for bootlegging, and was said to be an "expert whiskey maker".
