Vernon Foster Gamble Jr., 72, of Memphis, chairman of the Memphis Board of Solicitations for 17 years and a retired insurance executive for New York Life, died Saturday at his home. Services will be at 3 p.m. Tuesday at St. Luke's United Methodist Church with entombment in Memorial Park Mausoleum. Memphis Funeral Home Poplar Chapel has charge. He was past president and a Melvin Jones Fellow of the White Station Lions Club, which named him Humanitarian of the Year in 1980. He was a member of Al Chymia Temple, president of the board of directors at Wesley Highland Manor and a vice president of Wesley Housing Corp. of Memphis. He belonged to St. Luke's United Methodist Church, where he was the coordinator of the Wesley Madison project. He was a graduate of Chamberland Hunt Military Academy in Vicksburg, Miss., and attended Memphis State University. He leaves his wife, Joy Sawyer Gamble; a daughter, Mrs. Valerie G. Cowan, and a son, John F. Gamble, both of Memphis, and four grandchildren. The family requests that any memorials be sent to St. Luke's United Methodist Church or to Wesley Highland Manor.
