"Johnathan"
The mention of my child's name may bring tears to my eyes, but it never fails to bring music to my ears. If you are really my friend, let me hear the music of his name! It soothes my broken heart and sings to my soul!
~Author Unknown ~
In July of 1985 just shy of being 2 years old we met Johnathan for the first time. He had lived in the hospital, in Oklahoma City since almost birth. He and I formed an immediate unbreakable bond. He considered me his Mother and He was my son!
Johnathan was born with a rare form of muscular dystrophy called Centronuclear Myopathy, not considered a progressive dystrophy but one that left his breathing muscles weak. Johnathan was dependent on a ventilator for breathing for a majority of his life.
Johnathan did a lot of living in his short life! If there was something he was interested in, we attempted to do it, we traveled, we fished, we went camping, we went to sports games, we went to baseball card, reptile and gem shows all over the country, he learned to make polished rocks for jewelry, he learned to use a computer to do his school work. When he lost his voice he learned to talk on a computer like the one Stephen Hawkins used to lecture. He wrote e-mails back and forth with his best friend and cousin Jerid Schmidt. He had a variety of pets, a tarantula, a boa snake, out door goldfish , Felix a green amazon parrot, JC the Cat, and his service dog Bo, a black lab.
Johnathan touched and changed many lives. He changed peoples ideas and opinions on disabilities.
No matter what he always had a smile for anyone he came in contact with.
I'm not sure why God gave Johnathan and I each other to love as family but He did and for that, I am forever grateful, I will forever love and miss my Son.
