Catherine Marie Egstad, age 92, passed away on Monday, May 16, 2011, at Skaalen Nursing and Rehab Center.

She was born in Viroqua on July 30, 1918, the youngest daughter of Peter and Anna (Baldwin) Amundson. At six months, she lost her mother during the 1919 Spanish flu epidemic. She was raised by her grandparents Ingeborg and Hans Lindvig for nine years and upon their deaths by her aunt and uncle Ella and Martin Christianson. She was baptized at Viroqua Main Street Lutheran Church Dec. 15, 1918, by the Rev. Hovstad and confirmed at the historic country Westby Coon Prairie Church June 18, 1933, by the Rev. J.O. Holum. She attended Avalanche and Seas Branch grade schools and graduated from Westby High School in 1935.

On March 27, 1937, she was united in marriage to Martin H. Egstad at the Westby Coon Prairie Lutheran Church parsonage by the Rev. J.O. Holum. They were married for 72 years before his death on Nov. 3, 2009. Catherine was a farm wife most of her life on farms in Jersey Valley near Westby for nine years and near Melvina for 48 years. Later years she worked at Spartek in Sparta for 14 years. She was an accomplished seamstress, crocheter, and a great cook and baker. Many people received her hand-crafted items and their favorite baked goodies including Norwegian foods. She also loved tending to her large garden and canning fruits and vegetables.

After retirement she and Martin traveled to many places including visiting relatives in Norway. After they left the farm in 1995, they moved to Evansville, and in 1999 they moved to Vennevoll in Stoughton. Catherine is the last member of her family.

Survivors include three daughters, Anna Marie (John) Edwards of Evansville, Marlene Strait of Whitewater, and Joyce Egstad of McFarland; four grandchildren, Scott (Kelly) Strait of Whitewater, Rhonda (Joe) Scarpelli of Evansville, Nathan Edwards of Evansville, Steven Edwards of Oregon, and granddaughter-in-law Julie Strait of Elkhorn; nine great-grandchildren, Rachel (Heath) Fillebrown of Whitewater, Carissa (Justin) Carpenter, Carmen Aumsbaugh and Lucas (Catina Coe) Babler all of Columbia City, Ind., Megan and Kyle Strait of Elkhorn, Carl, Yvanna and Catherine Strait of Whitewater; nine great-great-grandchildren, Faith and Carson Carpenter, Brooklyn Babler, Bryan and Bryce Aumsbaugh, Mercedes, Lillye and Maximus Fillebrown, and Layla Babler; two half-sisters, Velma Hrivnak of Portland, Ore., and Ellen Mathison, Everette, Wash.; cousin, Earl (Clarice) Linderud of Stoughton; and three nieces, Betty (Gene) Tyler and Linda (Bob) Kay of Holmen, and Bonnie Crogan of West Salem.

Catherine has joined Martin where he has been resting in eternal peace since Nov. 3, 2009. She was also preceded in death by her son-in-law, Kermit Strait in 1988; grandson, Michael Strait in 2004; sisters and brothers-in-law, Agnes (Otto) Monson and Evelyn (John) Livingston; and half-brothers, Robert and Ross Lindvig.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, May 20, 2011, at SKAALEN CHAPEL, 400 N. Morris St., Stoughton with the Rev. James Koza officiating. Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. until time of service. Burial will be in the Lutheran South Cemetery, Stoughton.
