William Dyer Byrd, 86, former mayor of Caruthersville, died at Pemiscot County Memorial Hospital Tuesday morning, September 29, where he had been a patient for a few days after suffering a fractured hip in a fall. He lived at the Brown boarding home.
Mr. Byrd was born in Clay County, Ky., August 24, 1884, the son of Joseph and Alice Pullman Byrd. In the early 1900's he was married to Miss Sally White and they came to Caruthersville to live around that time.
Mrs. Byrd preceded him in death December 3, 1967 and their only child, W.D. Byrd Jr. died in 1940.
He was in the insurance business until he retired and served in various city offices including those of mayor, collector and police judge, over a span of many years. He was a member of Eastwood Memorial Methodist church.
Funeral services will be held this (Thursday) afternoon in the Dean Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Marvin Niblack officiating. Burial will be in Little Prairie Cemetery.
He is survived by a niece, Mrs. Dorothy Ward Thompson of this city and a nephew, Thos. B. (Bub) Ward Jr. of Blytheville.
