David married Marianna Cooper in 1951 in Oquawka IL.
He was a Navy veteran. He was a charter member and past president of the Aledo Lions Club and a member of United Auto Workers Local 1304, East Moline.
Survivors include his wife; a daughter Cindy Humes, sons, Cecil Thorndike and Scott Thorndike.
David is the son of Norris Ralph Thorndike and Caroline Conner-Thorndike. Brothers include Norris Oakley Thorndike "Tom", Jack Vernon Thorndike, Donald Orville Thorndike "Pete" and Samuel Willis Thorndike. Sisters include Maxine Thorndike-Feeney and Jennie "Darlene" Thorndike-Hoskins.
