James S. Hudgins, Sr., 84, died Tuesday, September 1, 2009. A native of Crystal, W.Va., he had been a Peninsula resident since 1964 where he worked as a carpenter. A Navy veteran of Wolrd War II, he enjoyed wrestling and ballroom dancing. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred L. Hudgins; his parents, Willie and Eva Hudgins; three sisters; and one brother. Survivors include his children, Sherry Buchanan and her husband, Al of Smithfield, Cathy Barstow and her husband, Tom of Moyock, N.C., James Hudgins, Jr. and his wife, Joy of James Store, Va., Donna Hudgins of Newport News and Jerry Hudgins and his wife, Teresa of Hampton; two brothers, Cecil Hudgins and Oscar Hudgins both of Princeton, W.Va.; ten grandchildren; and eleven great-grandchildren. A funeral service will be conducted at 1:00 p.m, Friday, September 4, 2009 in the R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home Chapel in Hampton, Va., by Dr. Paul Lawson. Interment with Navy honors will follow in Parklawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.Memorials may be made to the National Kidney Foundation, 1742 East Parham Road, Richmond, VA 23234.
