JOHN STILES was the son of RACHELL BEADELL(S) and JOHN STILES, of England. His mother's maiden name is not known.

His parents immigrated when he was a child in 1634 from London to Boston, MA. From there, in the company of his father's three brothers and the rest of their party, they made their way to the area of Windsor in Hartford County, CT.

Within a few years his parents had established a farm as the servants of Sir Richard Saltonstall, under whose patronage they left England. But eventually they owned their land and John inherited 12 acres, where he made his home.

JOHN STILES, Jr. married DORCAS BURT on 28 October 1658.

Their known children:

1) Ephraim Stiles b. 1670

He married well, as the Burts were already a prominent line in Springfield, MA and those interested in her family will find that it has been written about quite a bit. King Phillip's War was fought most aggressively from 1675-1677 and must have been one of the most significant events in the lives of JOHN, DORCAS, and their children. They had two daughters and three sons and they raised them at Windsor.

He was accounted a "citizen of good character and repute among his townsmen." He was sued in 1656 by John Bissell over the issue of carrying passengers over the river, for a total of 2 pounds, 10 shillings. The jury found for the defendant, JOHN Jr., but apparently charged him court costs. In 1675 citizens were levied a tax to support the Rivulet Ferry at Windsor. JOHN Jr. was listed as owning "family, horse and 4 oxen."

JOHN Jr. died at Windsor, Hartford Co, CT on 8 December 1683 at about the age of 50. DORCAS apparently married again, as there is a "Darkis" Stiles married to John Shethar on 7 January 1712-13 at Killingworth, CT.

Burial for JOHN Jr. in Springfield, Hampdon Co, MA. Estate probated in Hartford, Hartford Co, CT. Inventory was 19 lbs, 15 pence, no shillings.
