J. E. St. John came to Concrete, WA in 1907 and worked at the Washington Portland Cement Company and the Superior Portland Cement Company. He married Clara Von Pressentin at Mt. Vernon, WA on 06 Oct 1917 and the couple settled at Clallam Bay. They returned to Concrete in 1919 when he took over the management of Max Davis' Model clothing store which became Concrete Department Store. He eventually bought out Mr. Davis and continued in the mercantile business until his death at age 83. St. John was a member of Concrete I.O.O.F. Lodge, Concrete Rebekah Lodge, Canton Lodge of Sedro-Woolley and was Skagit County Democratic Central Committee chairman from 1958 to 1960.
