William Irving Canty was the fourth child and first son of William Jesse Canty and Nancy Young Canty (2nd wife) (Canty family Bible). At age eleven Irving became the sole supporter of his family due to his father's death.

WM. CANTY DIES - William Irving Canty, 65, an employee of the Standard Oil Company of Pascagoula for more than 20 years, died suddenly Thursday morning at the Quinn Fisheries Factory, where he had gone to install a gasoline pump. He has resided in Pascagoula all of his life and is survived by his widow, Mrs. Lena Grant Canty, two daughters, Mrs. Jessie Flanagan and Mrs. Nancy Woodall, sons, Kell Canty and Harold Canty, all of Pascagoula, and sons, Pvt Owen Canty stationed at Fort McClellan, Ala., taking basic training, Sgt Richard Canty, of the United States Army, overseas in the Pacific, and eight grandchildren. Pvt Owen Canty has arrived home for the funeral which will be held Saturday at 4 p.m. at the First Baptist Church, in Pascagoula, with Dr. L. E. Green officiating. Interment will be in the Greenwood Cemetery.
