Mrs. D. L. Arey Dies Here
Mrs. Nannie Lugenia Arey, widow of the late Dougald Lindsay Arey, died at 1:45 o'clock Sunday morning at her home on North Boundary street, of pneumonia which developed Thursday.
Funeral services were to be held from her residence this afternoon at 3:30 o'clock with Dr. Arch C. Cree of the First Baptist church in charge, assisted by DR. Walter B. West, pastor of the First Methodist church. Interment was to follow at Chestnut Hill cemetery, and Mrs. Arey will lie beside the body of her husband and a grandchild, Billy Arey. Nephews were to serve as pallbearers. They include Richard Arey, Lloyd Arey, John Kelly, Marvin Thomas, W.B. Arey, and J. R. Hall.
Mrs. Homer Lingle was to sing a song which Mrs. Arey loved, "In a Garden", and the services will include the reading of a favorite poem, "The Rose Still Grows Beyond the Wall" by A. L. Frink.
The casket was blanketed with pink radiance roses, white snapdragons and lillies of the valley.
In the passing of Mrs. Arey, Salisbury has lost another outstanding woman of the old school, a home lover and a gentlewomen who found her joy in the simple things of life - flowers, children and intimate friends. These she knew throughout many satisfying years.
She was born near Trading Ford in Rowan county on November 12, 1857, the daughter of Alexander Shemwell and Katherine Reid. On December 27, 1877 she was married to Dougald Linday Arey, and became the mother of eight children. All of her married life and earlier years were spent in Salisbury, at the North Boundary street home where her death occurred.
She was a devoted member of the First Baptist church where she attended regularly until two years ago. Since that time she has remained closely at home. Her flower garden, always one of her major interests gave her the utmost pleasure as it did the hundreds of friends who visited it and shared it's beauty.
On September 2, Mrs. Arey slipped and fell at her home. She was a hospital patient for a time, but after the broken hip had been treated she returned to her home and appeared to be recovering from the accident. She was daily up and in a rolling chair until Thursday when fatal pneumonia developed. Death came early Sunday morning.
Surviving Mrs. Arey are a sister, Mrs. Ida Thomas, and the following children : Mrs. B.H. Isenhower, of Salisbury; K.C. Arey, Danville, Va; Mrs. Clarence H. Summers, Salisbury; H.L. Arey, Salisbury. Surviving also are nine granchildren and one great grandchild.
Note: Nancy (Shemwell) Arey was the fourth child and third daughter of Alexander Shemwell and Katherine Reid. She died October 15, 1939. Dougald Arey was born 4/10/1856 and passed away 3/20/1922. The Arey family was well known and respected in the county and were known for their products in the local brewing industry.
