Funeral Held From the Residence This After-
noon - Was Large Property Holder.

-----------------
Mr. D. L. Arey died at his home on North Boundary street last night about 8 o'clock after an illness of some weeks. the funeral took place from the residence this afternoon at 4 o'clock, conducted by Rev. R. L. Lemons of the First Baptist church and the interment was in Chestnut Hills cemetery. The active pall bearers were John A. Kelly, W.C. Maupin, W.T. Busby, A.E. Davis, W.E. McWhirter and L.A. Mahaley. the honorary pall bearers were H.P. Brandis, H.N. Woodson, P.B. Beard, H. Z. White, J.H. Ramsey, A.L. Smoot, J.D. Norwood, J.E. Stokes, A.H. Boyden, T.C. Linn, L.H. Clement, A. H. Graf, J.F. McCubbins, Frank R. Brown, J.P. Trexler and W.W. Taylor. Members of the Salisbury Lodge of the Elks, of which deceased was a member, attended in a body.

Mr. Arey was a native of Rowan county and would have been 67 years old the 10th of next month. He is survived by his widow and four sons and two daughters, Messrs. E.C., Bert, Harry and Craig Arey and Mrs. B. H. Isenhower and Mrs. Clarence Summers, and a large number of other relatives. He spent his boyhood days on the farm in the eastern section of the county and came to Salisbury when a young man and had spent the remainder of his life here. In business he had been very sucessful and had accumulated considerable property and at the time of his death was probably the largest single property holder in this city or county. Much of his holdings were in business property in the heart of the city. He was also largely interested in several of the cities financial institutions and industrial enterprises. Mr. Arey had lived a retired life, the greater part of his time spent at his splendid suburban home. Here he delighted to have his friends call and spend an evening with him. He loved nature and the out-door world and delighted to get out with his friends and enjoy these things.

Mr. Arey was a man of large heart and many are those who had been befriended by him. No man loved his friends better or was more loyal to them, and these he had in large numbers. He delighted to surround himself with those of his own flesh and blood and was never more contented than when he had his family gathered at his hospitible home. He was a reserved man in many respects but he never withheld his friendship from those to whom he took a liking. He was one of this city and county's best known men and although his death has been expected for some days it caused genuine sorrow throughout the county.

Mr. Arey had been a sufferer for several years from diabetes and some time ago had a stroke of paralysis from which he practically recovered but was seized with another attack recently and from this he never recovered.

The Diamond Cotton Mills in which Mr. Arey was largely interested and which he had a big part in organizing and putting into operation closed this afternoon for the funeral and burial.
