Son of James Perrin Hunnicutt and Bethania "Thaney" Parish (also seen as Bethany; also seen as Parrish; also seen as Bethunia, which is probably a poor transcription, based on Thaney as her known nickname).

Artemus married Rebecca Sugg on 11 December 1876 at the home of her mother Mary Ann (Rowland) Sugg in Raleigh Township, Wake Co., NC.

Over the years, Raleigh City Directories revealed the following:

Artemus Hunnicutt

Employment: Raleigh Cotton Gin Company (Architect), Mechanic, Wheelwright

Addresses: Bloodworth, Blount, 424 Smithfield

He and Rebecca had twelve children, of which ten are known, having lived into adulthood and married. The first died as of 1900; the second had died by 1910. I have endeavored to create memorials (or link memorials already created) for all ten of their children.

It should be noted that in the 7 June 1880 Raleigh, Wake Co., NC Census, Mary Ann (Rowland) Sugg and Elizabeth "Lizzie" Sugg are living with Artemus, Rebecca, and family. As Rebecca figured in later divisions of Mary's lands, it is uncertain whether or not the home in which they lived was Mary's or that of Artemus.

(From "The Evening Visitor," Raleigh, North Carolina, Friday, 29 July 1881; Page 4)

“The Raleigh Cotton Gin Company tested a Gin and Condenser of their make at my Gin House; and after much close observation of its workings, I do not hesitate in saying that I believe the Gins and Condensers, manufactured by them, are equal to most and superior to many Gins sold in this State. M. A. BLEDSOE. Mr. Artemus Hunnicutt having done considerable work for us in the way of repairing Gins, we take pleasure in saying that we believe him to be master of bis profession and the best workman in the State known to us in that line.”

(From “A light on a Hill”: A History of the Samaria Baptist Church, Raleigh, North Carolina, 1878-1978):

The Artemus and Susan Rebecca Sugg Hunnicutt Family—This family moved to Poole Road in Raleigh around 1900. Mrs. Hunnicutt joined Samaria Church. She and her ten children attended Samaria faithfully and regularly until her death March, 1937.
