Jesse Ward was the son of Phillip Floyd & Mary Catherine Ward. Jesse attended Rosenberg High School and graduated Valdictorian of his class in May of 1914. He became a school teacher and in 1924 was elected Superintendent of Ft. Bend County Schools. Later he served four terms in the Texas House of Representatives. He was first elected in 1944, and first served from 1945-49; then went back in 1954-55 and served four more years. Also, Jesse, in partnership with Julius Gubbels and Fred Kennelly opened the Rose Rich Shopping Center.
On August 12, 1917, Jesse married Eula F. Hopkins in Ft. Bend County, Texas. On March 2, 1918, they had a son who died the same day of his birth. He is buried near grandparents, P. F. & M. C. Ward in the Woodman of the World Cemetery in Rosenberg. Marker only states son of J. F. Ward. They later had a son named Thomas Floyd ("Tommy") Ward, who was born June 18, 1925 in Needville, Texas. Jesse & Eula divorced and he remarried years later to Olivia "Ollie" Wilson. Jesse lived in Rosenberg most of the time and Ollie lived in Austin, but the arrangement worked for them and they remained married the rest of their lives.
His nephew, F. E. Hubbell, remembered that his Uncle Jesse never held a golf club until he was in his 40's. At that time he was running the Fairview Cafe, filling station and tourist courts and was working so hard that the doctor suggested that he needed a hobby like golf. He laughed at the idea at first, but before it was over he was playing every day. He loved the game and played a good game even in his seventies. As he grew older he couldn't drive the ball very far, but it was always straight as an arrow. Uncle Jesse was greatly responsible for the beginning of the Fort Bend Country Club.
On April 13, 1974, Jesse Ward passed away at the Polly Ryon Hospital in Richmond, Texas. It had taken him some time to decide to be buried in Austin, because Fort Bend County was definitely his home and where his heart was. His wife Ollie finally convinced him to be buried next to her in Austin.
