Ernest Hine, 84, A Former Mayor, Buried Tuesday.

Ernest Hine, scion of two of Limestone's oldest and most prominent families, died at his home on West Washington Street Sunday night after a long period of enfeebled health.

His body was interred in the City Cemetery beside that of his wife, Mrs. Kate Anderson Hine, who preceded him in death a few years ago.

Mr. Hine was born in Athens on December 3, 1858, and thus would have been 85 years of age had he lived until his next birthday three months hence.

He was the son of the late William Anson Hine and Leticia Sloss Hine, the former for many years one of Athens' leading businessmen and religious leaders.

Mr. Hine, during his eight and a half decades of life had been prominent in many of Athens' forward moves. Aside from serving as mayor from 1916 to 1920, Mr. Hine was one of the organizers of the Limestone County Fair Association, which did much for the improvement of livestock and farming methods. Termed a theorist by some, Mr. Hine's methods have long since been amply proven correct in practical application.

Mr. Hine was a man of aesthetic tastes, an advocate of improved educational facilities and a lover of music. For many years he was a member of the choir of the Athens First Methodist Church, of which he was a loyal member.

Funeral services were conducted at the home at 5 o'clock Tuesday afternoon by his pastor, Dr. B.T. Waites, McConnell directing.

The following served as active pallbearers: D.L. Yarbrough, A.L. Clem, J.W. Chambers Jr., John M. McDonald, Fred Martin and Benton S. Turrentine.

Honorary pallbearers were A.B. Crutcher, J.G. Mason, W.G. Martin, Ben Jaffe, T.W. Woodroof, M.F. Whitt, I.B. Lerman, George C. Johnson, W.W. Malone, A.J. Grisham, T.E. Gilbert, R.N. Cartwright, Judge A.M. McConnell, R.B. Stonestreet, R.H. Walker, G.H. Wood, L.D. Glaze, R.H. Richardson, D.G. Looney, M.M. and D.L. Rosenau.

Surviving Mr. Hine are three daughters, Mrs. J.E. Clem, Mrs. Robert S. Beattie and Miss Henrietta Hine, of Athens; one son, Butler P. A. Hine of Decatur, and a number of grandchildren, to all whom the tenderest sympathy of a wide circle of friends is extended.
