Sometime shortly after 1788, "Joseph STORRS removed from Mansfield to the then almost unknown wilderness of the western shore of Lake Champlain, and settled in Westport, Essex Co., New York, where he was one of the first inhabitants. A man of deep religious convictions, he was a member and deacon of the Congregational Church at Westport until his death in 1827."

Joseph STORRS, Jr. (1753-1827) died at Westport, Essex County, New York in 1827. He was buried near the lake in Westport, but later his remains were removed to the Black River Burying Ground in Westport. In 1880, his nephew, Charles STORRS had erected a substantial granite stone to his memory."
