Thomas served the Confederate States of America during the Civil War

enlisted 9 Jun 1861 at Georgia in Company H, 9th Regiment Georgia Volunteers as a Sergeant and served continuously until 16 Oct 1863 at Campbells Station, East Tennessee when he was shot in the right knee and lost his leg between the knee and thigh. he was discharged at Richmond, Virginia at the rank of Captain on 7 Dec 1864
