Alvin Chapin was born on 15 November 1808 in Cheshire, Berkshire, Massachusetts, the son of Charles Chapin, Jr. and his wife Clara Day.
He married Elvira Horton, the daughter of Luther Horton and Clarissa Forsyth on 21 Apri1 1835.

He was an earlier settler in West Union, Steuben County, New York, living on the southwest side of the town in 1840. His property included a large clearing and was on the hill south of the Kyder Creek. In 1841, Governor Horation Seymour stopped at his log cabin for an overnight stay when passing through the country side.
