JOHN HERZOG

HE SUCCUMBS TO HEART FAILURE
The community was grieved on Tuesday to learn that John Herzog, one of the respected citizens of this city, passed away at his home on Maple street following a severe attack of heart trouble.
John Herzog was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Herzog and was born in the state of Pennsylvania seventy-eight years ago. When seven years old, in 1847, his parents came to the town of New Holstein and located in the woods near St. Anna. Here he grew to manhood and assisted in clearing the land of the heavy timber and in other pioneer work. In 1862 he started out for himself purchasing a tract of timber land in East Brothertown, three miles southwest of this city, on which he later built a log house. On Jan. 9, 1866, he was married at the Catholic Church in Marytown to Frances Turba of St. Anna and the same winter they moved onto the homestead. Mr. Herzog was a far-seeing and energetic man and with his wife worked to such advantage as to add to his acreage and cultivate larger portions of his holding each year, he
owned 175 acres of the finest land hereabouts. It was no easy task for him to accomplish this and in order to do it he worked early and late, and in the winter time when farm work was slack he quarried and hauled stone from his farm to this city for building purposes, the proceeds thus received being wisely put back into the land, which, under his skillful management was rapidly increasing in value. In 1910 he erected a substantial home in this city on the south side and retired from the farm, which is now owned by his son-in-law, Henry Gelling.
Mr. Herzog was the last surviving member of his family, his brother, Joseph of St. Anna and his sister, Mrs. Hubert Kraus, preceding him in death several years ago.
The funeral was held at St. Mary's church, Rev. Fr. L. N. Thelen celebrating Requiem Mass with interment in the St. Mary's cemetery.
He is survived by ten children, three sons, John and Anton of Chilton town, Joseph of this city and seven daughters, Mrs. Frank Olbrich of Brothertown, Mrs. Jacob Nennig of Chilton town, Mrs. Benedict Heimerl of Marytown, Mrs. Theo Heinze of this city, Mrs. Henry Gellings of Brothertown, Mrs. Joseph Burg of Tyler, N. D., and Miss Katherine at home.
John and Frances also had a son Henry who died at the age of 3.
