He was born in Jacksonville and lived in Palm City for three years, coming from Maggie Valley, N.C.
Before retirement, he was vice president of sales for CSX Railroad. He organized the Piggy-Back Rail System still used today.
Mr. Cheney served in the Marine Corps.
Mr. Cheney was an avid golfer.
Survivors include his sons, Mike Cheney of Palm City and Norman Cheney of San Francisco; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Patricia Meroney Cheney, in 1995.
SERVICES: A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. April 17 in Arlington Memorial Park in Jacksonville with the Rev. W.F. Frost Weaver officiating. Arrangements are by Martin Funeral Home & Crematory, Stuart.
