“Mrs. Mary Milligan, aged 82 years, widow of the late Robert A. Milligan, passed away at ten o’clock Saturday night at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Moe Hirsch, who lives south of Winthrop two miles. She had been ill with heart trouble for several years, and while she had been quite ill at numerous times she regained strength enough to be up and about her home. She was, however, very frail and was taken last fall to the home of her daughter where she was tenderly cared for.

Mrs. Milligan was born in Warren County April 18, 1854 being a daughter of William and Eliza Smalley. Her marriage to Robert A. Milligan occurred October 24, 1878, at her parents’ home, which later became the home of Mr. and Mrs. Milligan, and on which farm the son, Orrie E. Milligan, now resides.

Mr. and Mrs. Milligan, after spending thirty years farming, retired from active life and moved to Attica in December 1908, where they happily lived until Mr. Milligan’s death on August 18, 1931. They celebrated their golden wedding anniversary on October 24, 1928.

Mrs. Milligan was held in high esteem by all who knew her. She was devoted to her family and one of her greatest pleasures were to have her children, grandchildren and other relatives at her home. She was a member of the Christian church and of Attica Chapter, No. 125 Order of Eastern Star, and when her health permitted she was an active worker in both the church and O.E.S.

Mrs. Milligan is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Mabel Hirsch, at whose home she died, and one son, Orrie E. Milligan, who resided on the farm which was at one time the Smalley and later the Milligan homestead. She leaves five grandchildren, Mrs. Richard Parient, living near Winthrop, Mrs. Thos. Grant of Chicago, Mrs. Martin Greeding who lives northwest of Attica a mile and a half, and Robert and Marjorie Milligan, both of Warren County, as well as two great-grandchildren Thomas Grant and William Richard Parient. She is also survived by three sisters, Mrs. Lottie Milligan and Mrs. Martha Ault of Attica and Mrs. Jennie Atkinson of Remington, and by one brother, Edwin Smalley, who lives near Mt. Ayr, Indiana.

The remains were taken to the Milligan home, corner of Monroe and Council streets, Monday afternoon. Funeral services were conducted to two o’clock Tuesday afternoon at the home, Elder A. W. Jackman of this city officiating. Burial was made in Riverside cemetery, this city, beside the body of the husband.” – January 30, 1936
