United States Stage Actor.

He made his debut in Detroit as Murad in "The French Spy" in 1853. He made his New York debut in 1856 in the role of Sir Thomas Clifford in "The Hunchback." By 1858, he was in the stock company of the Boston Museum.

In 1861 he interrupted his career to join the 28th Mass. Infantry and served for a year as a Captain. He did not see action in any major battles and was mustered out after a year. From 1867 to 1870, he co-managed San Francisco's new California Theatre with fellow tragedian John McCullough.

His European debut occurred in 1867 in London, and he returned to that city on tour in 1882, 1883 and 1884, acting opposite Henry Irving.

He received wider fame during the 1875 Jarrett and Palmer production of "Julius Caesar," playing Cassius. While he primarily acted in Shakespeare, essaying the roles of King Lear, Hamlet, Othello and Iago, Leontes (A Winter's Tale), Shylock, Romeo, and Macbeth, he also performed the title lead in Victor Hugo's "Hernani", Lanciotto in George H. Boker's "Francesca da Rimini", and Jamie Harebell in "The Man o' Airlie."

From 1886 to 1891, he managed and co-starred in a series of cross-country tours with Edwin Booth. At the same time, he began to plan the erection of a theater to promote American drama. His health declined, and he had to withdraw partway through a performance of "Richelieu" on March 18, 1891, dying from pneumonia three days later.

He was married to Mary F. Mayer, daughter of a Boston confectioner, in 1858. They had three daughters, Edith Miltonia, Anna Gertrude, and Mary.

He was a Civil War Veteran.
