James Olberding was born to Cyril and Sue (Mixon) Olberding on March 12, 1954 in Seneca, Kansas. At the age of two, he moved to Weston, Missouri where he was raised by his aunt and uncle, Frances and Albert Boltz, until the age of eighteen. After his high school graduation, he attended Missouri Western College for one year. He then worked in the auto industry as a sales person. He moved to Pipestone, Minnesota in 1977, where he met Ginger Martens. James and Ginger were united in marriage on July 3, 1984. For the last four years of his life, he resided in Nokomis Apartments, where he met many special people. On May 6, 2009, he moved to Pipestone County Hospice House where he died on May 15, 2009, surrounded by his family.

As a boy, James enjoyed bird hunting with his brothers, and plyaing basketball. He loved playing pool and was an avid poker player. Throughout his life he enjoyed spending time with his family, attending his children's sporting events and other activities. He especially enjoyed going to movies with his grandchildren.

He is lovingly remembered by his children, Matthew Martens, Alison Olberding and her boyfriend, Nick Winter, Joshua Olberding, Amanda Olberding, and Holly Olberding, all of Pipestone, Minnesota; grandchildren, Johnathon and Lydya Martens of Pipestone, Eric Lange of Pipestone, Morgan Westenberg of Sunnyside, Washington, Kendra and Kadence Olberding of Pipestone; sister, Susan Davis and her husband, Jim of Topeka, Kansas; brothers, Dan Olberding and his wife, Joyce, of topeka, Kansas, Bob Olberding of St. Louis, Missouri; sister-in-law, Marsha Olberding of Lee Summit, Missouri; special friend, Ginger Olberding; eight nieces and nephews; and seven and a half great nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, adoptive parents, and his sister, Sally.
