"Dewitt C Kirby, 87, Dies at Home West of City"
Dewitt C. Kirby, 87-year-old pioneer resident of McIntosh county, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. E.L. Ayers, four miles west of Eufaula, Saturday, April 2, at 3 a.m., after a two-weeks' illness.
Mr. Kirby was born in Mississippi September 19, 1850, from whence he moved to Arkansas while a small boy. During the Civil War he moved with his widowed mother to Illinois where he lived until the close of the war. Then they moved to Arkansas where he grew to manhood and married Miss Caroline Hightower. To this union were born three boys and three girls, the wife dying at an early age. A few years later he was married a second time to Miss Adaline Cornett and to this union five girls and two boys were born.
In 1907 he moved with his family to Oklahoma where he has since resided, living near Vivian a greater part of the time.
He was a member of the Primitive Baptist church of Vivian and a devoted Christian.
He is survived by seven daughters: Mrs. Lura Garrett, Mrs. B.F. Hightower, Mrs. E.L. Ayers and Mrs. W.H. Reaves of the Vivian community and Mrs. J.F. Johnson, Wasco, Calif., Mrs. C.C. King, Tuscon, Ariz., and Mrs. H.M. Roth, McLean, Texas, one son,Mr. C.E. Kirby, Tucumcari, New Mex., and one brother, Mr. J.M. Kirby, Harmony, Ark., as well as a host of other relatives.
The pallbearers were four sons-in-law, B.F. Hightower, H.M. Roth, E.L. Ayers, and W.H. Reaves, and two grandsons, Leonard Ayers and Loy Garrett.
Funeral services were held from the Vivian church with the Rev. L.H. Pigg officiating and interment was in the Lenna cemetery, under the direction of the Kelley funeral home.
