Mrs. Shearer Succumbs
Mrs. Henrietta McDonald Byars Shearer, whose husband died when their four children were quite young, lived to see her two sons, and daughters dedicate themselves to public service.
One of this community's most beloved women, Mrs. Shearer died gently at Houston Hospital early Friday morning after several months' illness. She was 75.
Services were conducted from the First Methodist Church Saturday morning with the Rev. W C McCay, pastor, in charge. Interment was in the Houston Cemetery. Houston Funeral Service was in charge.
She leaves and editor-son, Edward, who is publisher of the Water Valley, Miss., Herald; a pastor-son, John Byars, who is pastor of the Methodist Church in Trout, La., and two daughters who are both registered nurses. They are: Mrs. Max Smith of Houston and Mrs. Alton B Parker of Lexington, Miss.
She also leaves the following grandchildren: Edward B Shearer, III, Paul Shearer, Mrs. Aaron Greer of Trout, La., Mrs. Francis Kerry of White Castle, La., John B Shearer, Jr., a student at Louisiana Tech, and Edgar and Milo Shearer of Trout; Martha Elizabeth Smith of Miss. State College, and Jimmy and Virginia Smith of Houston; and Martha Brooks Parker and Alton Byars Parker of Lexington, Miss.
Mrs. Shearer was born in Calhoun county on July 11, 1874, the daughter of the late State Senator and Mrs. John M Byars. Senator Byars represented Calhoun, Chickasaw, and Pontotoc counties in the State Legislature.
On July 11, 1898, she was wed to the late Edward B Shearer, who died June 7, 1907. Since her marriage, Mrs. Shearer had made her home in Houston. She had been a member of the Methodist Church since early childhood, and had been active in all phases of church work until reclining health forced her to yield. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and was past Matron of the Electa Chapter No. 46, Houston.
