Anna J. "Jean" Madlung, 91, Monticello died at 6:59 p.m., Friday, Aug. 21, 2009 at St. Vincent Hospital, Indianapolis.
She was born Feb. 6, 1918 at Francisco to the late Elmer and Maggie Dill Pond.
Her marriage was to Jack R Madlung of Monon Jan. 1, 1946. Mr. Madlung was a former Prisoner of War from November 1944 to February 1945 in Poland. He preceded her in death Dec. 27, 1998.
Jean was a 1937 graduate of Francisco High School, a 1939 graduate of Indiana Business School and also of Mrs. Burris Shorthand School.
Mrs. Madlung was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Monticello since 1958 where she had been a deacon, played in the bell choir, and participated in the Thanksgiving Basket Program for the needy.
She also attended weekly Bible study at the church. She was a private angel helping families in need. While attending business school, she worked for the Indiana School for the Blind.
She was later employed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture as an Enumerator, and also as a clerk for the Bureau of Motor Vehicles, Monticello.
She was a member of the Fortnightly Bridge Club and other various bridge clubs and just recently came in first two days in a row. She was the founder of the first Red Hat Society in Monticello known as the Golden Giggly Girls.
Every morning she worked the crossword puzzle in the Indianapolis Star. She enjoyed traveling. She took 398th bomb reunion trips with her husband to England, and later with her children. She also enjoyed cruises. Above all, she loved her family.
Surviving are daughters, Dr. Nancy Zeller, Greenville, N.C., Cherie (Mike) Ross, Indianapolis; son, Randy (Rebecca) Madlung, Monticello; grandchildren, Chris (Gianina) Zeller, John (Hiroko) Zeller, Derek Madlung, Ludmila Nikitina; great-granddaughter, Rylie Rollins; five nephews including David Pond and two nieces.
She is preceded in death by her parents; husband; brothers, Ted Dill, Claude Pond, Jesse Pond, John Pond; sisters, Virginia Redinbo, Mildred McFarland, and Dorothy Pond.
Visitation will be from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m., today at Springer-Voorhis-Draper Funeral Home. Presbyterian deacon prayer circle at 7 p.m. Services will be 10 a.m., Tuesday at the First Presbyterian Church of Monticello with Rev. Ruby Kleymann officiating.
Burial will be at Crown Hill Cemetery, Indianapolis.
Memorial donations may be given to the First Presbyterian Church Building Fund. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
