John E. Medes, 91, of Emmett, Idaho, formerly of Boise and Cloquet, MN, passed away March 1, 2006.

John was born October 8, 1914, in Spokane, WA, the son of Susan and M.B. Medes. From 1927 until 1989, John lived and worked in Cloquet, Minnesota. He graduated from Our Lady of Sacred Heart School, and Cloquet High School. He married Helen M. Erickson in 1940. To this union were born Betty, Mike and Sue.

He served his country during WWII with the 120th Infantry Division, European Theater. He saw action in the Battle of the Ardennes in Belgium and in Germany, where he was wounded. While in Belgium, he became acquainted with the Halleux family of Villers-le-Temple. It was to become a deep and binding lifelong friendship, culminating in John being the town's guest of honor during the Liberation Anniversary celebration in 1994. During his military duty, he was awarded the Purple Heart & Cluster, and the Bronze Star.

John was co-owner of Mission Orange Bottling Co., and owner of Medes Distributing Co. in Cloquet until he retired in 1975. He was very active in Boy Scouts, beginning in 1937 as Commander of Troop 171. He also served as their Explorer advisor, for which he was awarded the Silver Scout and Silver Beaver, and was a member of the Order of the Arrow. He also received the St. George medal for outstanding service to his Catholic parish.

He was one of the founders of Cloquet's Catholic pony football, and was active in little league baseball. Following the loss of his beloved wife in 1982, he became an involved Big Brother and was a mentor and role model for many of Cloquet's youth. Family and friendship were the center of John's life, and all comers were included in his many adventures into the boundary waters and southern corn fields of Minnesota in hot pursuit of walleyes and pheasant.

In 1989 he moved to Boise to be near his son, Mike, and family. John went back to "school" and earned his Master Gardener's certificate. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church of Boise. He also joined the "Happy Hoofers" walking group, became a ballroom dancer, a deadly winemaker, traveled several times to Germany and Belgium to visit his friends there, and in general lived each day to its fullest. His saying "You gotta keep doing what you can do" served him well as a senior citizen.

John loved all green growing things, children and animals. He was the world's greatest husband, dad, grandfather, great-grandfather, and father-in-law. John is survived by his children Betty Bubb of Ft. Wayne, IN, Mike (Liz) of Boise, ID, and Susan Medes of Lenoir, NC, and close family friend Lisa McCall, grandchildren Lori (Mike) Mueller of Colorado Springs, CO, Angie Bubb of Victorville, CA, Tom of Boise, ID and Patrick of Emmett, ID, great grandchildren Christopher and Alex.

He is also survived by his brother, Donald James Medes, and his family, of Duluth, MN.

The family would like to thank the staff of Plantation Place, the Idaho Veterans' Home, Emmett Rehab Center, and XL Hospice for their tender care of Johnny.

A gathering for his Idaho family and friends will be held Sunday, March 5, at 3 p.m. at The Waterfront in Lake Harbor, Boise, Idaho.

The family will receive friends on Friday March 10, 2006 from 1 pm until the 2 pm Memorial Mass of Christian Burial in Queen of Peace Catholic Church 102 4th Street, Cloquet.
